A Quick Primer On The European Super League (ESL)

The European Super League (ESL) seems to be real. Twelve of Europes biggest clubs have conspired and now set in motion a breakaway league. Here is a quick primer of what we know about the ESL so far:

What is the European Super League (ESL)?

A statement from the European Super League said: “Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.”

“It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.”

The league will be governed by its founding clubs who are: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

Why would these clubs want to break away?

Well, the reason Europe’s elite clubs want to break away from their respective domestic leagues is because of one reason and one only.

Here is a clue: the word starts with the letter ‘M’ and rhymes with money.

M.O.N.E.Y!!!!!

The pandemic has hit Europes biggest clubs in the pocket. They feel this is a way to recoup the money lost and also make a lot more of it in the future.

Barcelona are over €1 Billion in debt and Real Madrid’s debt is around €700 million. Initial reports say clubs in the ESL will make around €300 million per season.

What has the reaction by football’s governing bodies been?

FIFA, UEFA and other football governing have condemned the breakaway movement.

FIFA said: “As previously announced by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.”

Premier League also came out with a statement which read: “The Premier League condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart of the domestic and European football pyramid.

“A European Super League (ESL) will undermine the appeal of the whole game, and have a deeply damaging impact on the immediate and future prospects of the Premier League and its member clubs, and all those in football who rely on our funding and solidarity to prosper.”

What has the reaction by supporters been?

Some supporters expressed their excitement on seeing their club play the best teams in Europe week-in, week-out. But the majority of the response has been negative. A common consensus amongst supporters on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is the ESL will kill football and this is nothing but a money grab by greedy owners.

Where are we now?

The Super League clubs have sent a letter to FIFA president Gianno Infantino and UEFA counterpart Aleksander Ceferin stating the ESL has already been underwritten by funding of £3.5 billion from a financial institution. Investment bank JP Morgan have said it is financing the new breakaway competition.

It seems as though the 12 clubs are dead serious. Even after the backlash of the past 24 hours, all 12 “founding clubs” of the European Super League have quit their committee positions with UEFA and the ECA (European Club Association).

This is a major risk these clubs are taking. What if the league gets stale after a few years, the ESL collapses, where will the clubs stand after being booted out of their respective domestic leagues?  Bayern Munich has been tentative whilst Borussia Dortmund and PSG have announced that they are not interested in joining the ESL.

It seems as of right now it’s a game of chicken and who will have the leverage when all parties involved meet at the negotiating table.

Jens Lehmann Says Arsenal Supporters and Board Have Lowered Their Expectations under Arterta vs Wenger

Former Arsenal goalkeeper and legend Jens Lehmann is great for the media. He doesn’t censor his comments. He speaks his mind even if comes across as harsh. Recently when he was asked if he thinks Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta can turn things around at the faltering Gunners, Lehmann said: “I don’t see enthusiasm”.

Translation: “Neh.”

Jens Lehmann wonders why the Arsenal seems to have lowered their expectations under Mikel Arteta manager vs Wenger.

Some onlookers have found it strange how a rookie manager has the entire football establishment propping him up. He is a media darling. It seems as Mikel Arteta can do no wrong. But Arsenal is 10th on the Premier League table. If it were Arsene Wenger who was managing a team that is not even in Europa League contention he’d have a squad of the AFTV guys waiting at his gate with pitchforks.

Spurs Players Getting Fed Up Of Jose Mourinho Blaming Them

Even his contemporary at Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solkjaer, has had the media and his own supporters throwing shade his way. Solkjaer’s team is 2nd on the Premier League standings. The media, Arsenal board and supporters should have higher expectations for Mikel Arteta.

Maybe the Arsenal hierarchy is lowering their supporters’ expectations on purpose.  Keep wearing them down until fans slowly get accustomed to Arteta finishing deep in midtable.

Far inferior squads were led to the Top 4 by Arsene Wenger. It’s been a decade and the winning mentality is still not there. Unai Emery was more experienced, didn’t get the signings he wanted, and still managed to finish higher.

No senior player steps up game in game out. Arsenal has to rely on Bukayo Saka and Kieran Tierney to drag their squad up away from the relegation zone.  One game without them, a Liverpool team in the worst form of their life dismantled Arsenal with utter ease.

Jobless Jose Mourinho has Unai Emery Looking Over His Shoulder

I don’t know if the supporters of the Gunners should be flattered or should be worried. Unemployed Jose Mourinho is said to be interested in the Arsenal job if they decided to axe Unai Emery. The Spanish manager has been under pressure due to his team’s below-par start to the season.

Unai Emery has a problem. A defence problem. David Luiz and Sokratis are, to put it mildly, shite. Does Unai Emery know how to coach defence? from what we’ve seen this season so far it seems as though a. he doesn’t care, b. he doesn’t know, or c. all of the above.

Top 10 Premier League Transfers Of The 2019 Summer

The Premier League transfers window shut a couple of weeks ago so I figured it would be cool to make a list of the best deals made. Of course, as with every list, there are criteria.  We’ll measure each transfer by three factors: ability, need, and value for money.

Premier League Transfers Criteria

1. Ability

This should be the easiest. How good is the player? I’ll be judging each player from what is called the eye-test,

Simply put, the eye test is a way to judge an athlete as they compete within their sport based upon your own observations. Not by statistics, but by the media or any other means other than your own two eyes. – Domenic Scarano from Bleacher Report

…that is, of course, if I have seen the player play. if not, I’ll do my rigorous research on YouTube.

2. Need

Did the club in question need the player? Sometimes, clubs buy players because of availability, affordability, or the need to weaken their rivals. I’ll be judging whether or not the team was in desperate need of the player’s services.

3. Value for money

Unless they are Neymar, Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Lionel Messi, a player’s marketability isn’t going to match the amount of money the club shelled out for them in the first place. This is football in 2019.  That being said, they are still some great deals you can find in the premier league transfers market.
