It seems as though every week we read about racial abuse being directed at a footballer on social media. A simple misplaced pass could land in hot water with the racists online. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Premier League clubs are set to unite to boycott all social media for a full weekend of fixtures as they make a stand against racist abuse of footballers.

Swansea City, who are in the Championship (the second tier of English football), became the first club to ditch social media last week for seven days. 

The Premier League has been late to the party. They have sort to engage social media companies on how they can assist. A solution isn’t forthcoming. So they have decided to take matters into their own hands. It’s clear when the Premier League clubs plan to have this boycott. The clubs, however, want to do this in uniformity. 

“What we don’t want is a situation where some clubs have their own boycott while others do not,” a source at one Premier League club explained.

“This is very much all or nothing. If every club decided to do a blanket ban at the same time – and if that was around the same round of fixtures – it would have the maximum possible impact.”

It’s unfortunate that Premier League clubs have to go this route to put pressure on social media companies to do something. This may impact some clubs financially as they may have commercial agreements with firms that include promotion on their social media channels. 

If you think of it logistically, what can these realistically social media companies do? Create an algorithm the detects racist words and automatically block accounts that use them? The racist fool with simply create another account.

Racism sucks. I’m a black South African, I know all about it.  But I feel the media gives it too much airtime. The amount of racist abuse has increased ever since it became a hot topic on the internet. I bet you some of these idiots aren’t even racist but post racist things because of the attention they will get. Let’s ignore these dumb asses and maybe they will stop.
