A Quick Primer On The European Super League (ESL)

The European Super League (ESL) seems to be real. Twelve of Europes biggest clubs have conspired and now set in motion a breakaway league. Here is a quick primer of what we know about the ESL so far:

What is the European Super League (ESL)?

A statement from the European Super League said: “Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.”

“It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.”

The league will be governed by its founding clubs who are: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

Why would these clubs want to break away?

Well, the reason Europe’s elite clubs want to break away from their respective domestic leagues is because of one reason and one only.

Here is a clue: the word starts with the letter ‘M’ and rhymes with money.

M.O.N.E.Y!!!!!

The pandemic has hit Europes biggest clubs in the pocket. They feel this is a way to recoup the money lost and also make a lot more of it in the future.

Barcelona are over €1 Billion in debt and Real Madrid’s debt is around €700 million. Initial reports say clubs in the ESL will make around €300 million per season.

What has the reaction by football’s governing bodies been?

FIFA, UEFA and other football governing have condemned the breakaway movement.

FIFA said: “As previously announced by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.”

Premier League also came out with a statement which read: “The Premier League condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart of the domestic and European football pyramid.

“A European Super League (ESL) will undermine the appeal of the whole game, and have a deeply damaging impact on the immediate and future prospects of the Premier League and its member clubs, and all those in football who rely on our funding and solidarity to prosper.”

What has the reaction by supporters been?

Some supporters expressed their excitement on seeing their club play the best teams in Europe week-in, week-out. But the majority of the response has been negative. A common consensus amongst supporters on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is the ESL will kill football and this is nothing but a money grab by greedy owners.

Where are we now?

The Super League clubs have sent a letter to FIFA president Gianno Infantino and UEFA counterpart Aleksander Ceferin stating the ESL has already been underwritten by funding of £3.5 billion from a financial institution. Investment bank JP Morgan have said it is financing the new breakaway competition.

It seems as though the 12 clubs are dead serious. Even after the backlash of the past 24 hours, all 12 “founding clubs” of the European Super League have quit their committee positions with UEFA and the ECA (European Club Association).

This is a major risk these clubs are taking. What if the league gets stale after a few years, the ESL collapses, where will the clubs stand after being booted out of their respective domestic leagues?  Bayern Munich has been tentative whilst Borussia Dortmund and PSG have announced that they are not interested in joining the ESL.

It seems as of right now it’s a game of chicken and who will have the leverage when all parties involved meet at the negotiating table.

Jose Mourinho Replies To Paul Pogba’s Comments: “I Would Like To Say I Couldn’t Care Less With What He Says.”

I’m sure you thought you had seen the last of the Jose Mourinho Paul Pogba beef when the former was sacked by Manchester United.

In an interview he did with Sky Sports this week, Paul Pogba resurrected the conflict by criticising Jose Mourinho’s man-management. Mourinho was asked about it in his post-game interview after his team’s 2-2 draw with Everton last night. The Portuguese tactician expressed his disinterest in entertaining any of the negative comments made by Paul Pogba.

Spurs Players Getting Fed Up Of Jose Mourinho Blaming Them

Paul Pogba felt Mourinho “went against players”. Something that new Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t do.

Jose Mourinho’s old school managerial style of calling out his players in public doesn’t seem to resonate well with the millennials. Maybe he thinks being critical of his players in the media is a motivator. But it isn’t. It instead causes friction in the dressing room and news for us bloggers.

‘Losing the dressing room’ has been an issue Jose Mourinho has had to deal with in his past couple of managerial jobs. He left Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Manchester United under those negative circumstances. And it seems as though the axe is not so far away in Tottenham because players are apparently ‘fed up‘ with his constant blaming.

If Paul Pogba stays at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho escapes the employment reaper and Spurs, this isn’t the last instalment of this beef.

Solskjaer on Mourinho: You can’t say second is an achievement

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, unlike the dude he took over from as Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, doesn’t feel finishing second in the league behind Manchester City is an achievement.

“You can’t say that is an achievement. Our ambition is a lot more than second place. I said that when I wasn’t at the club – you can never be happy with that. Our ambition is to catch the team in front of us.”

To be fair, when Jose Mourinho made the statement Manchester United had a back four of Young, Jones, Smalling and Valencia and City were aiming for 100 points that season.

Harry Kane says ‘Tottenham are going nowhere’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talks about ambition but just last month he said ‘trophies are for egos for some manager’.

Say wha?

That’s a strange statement to make for a manager of a club that was built on winning trophies.  Well of course Jose Mourinho couldn’t resist taking a dig at Solskjaer.

Mourinho said: “It’s his opinion. I’m pretty sure his big boss Sir Alex had a different opinion about it. But I respect what Solskjaer thinks. I think different.

“Freedom of thinking, freedom of ideas, and if that is what he thinks that is fine by me. It’s not a problem for me, he’s not being disrespectful to anyone.

“But I repeat I believe his big boss, and the biggest in Premier League history, has a different view in relation to that.”

Tottenham host Manchester United this afternoon in the Premier League. Solskjaer is ironically trying to keep his side second spot whilst Mourinho is trying to qualify his team to the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: ‘It didn’t work today…’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side got beat by 3 goals to 1 against Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA Cup last night. His team was trash.

Solskjaer made five changes from the team that had won 0-2 against Crystal Palace during the week.

Not only did he make alterations to the team, he decided to make adjustments to the setup too. Abandoning the 4-2-3-1 formation and starting with a 5-3-2.

After claiming “We picked a team to give us a best possible opportunity to go through in the cup…” He admitted that his team selection “didn’t work”

What Should Be Considered A Less Than Crappy First Season For Jose Mourinho?

“We picked a team to give us a best possible opportunity to go through in the cup and be ready for Wednesday [against West Ham]. It didn’t work today. We had to change things at half-time when Eric came off but that will stand us in good stead for Wednesday. I picked the team today to go through.”

Before this loss, Manchester United shit didn’t stink. They were 19 games unbeaten and played their best football post-lockdown. Going on a run of 6 wins, 2 draws, and 0 defeats. Apart from the first game back against Spurs and an FA Cup quarterfinal game versus Norwich City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played with the same eleven.

The team was free-flowing and scoring goals for fun. This is why it came as a surprise to many when Ole changed the team and system so drastically for such a big game.

“Everyone has to perform and everyone has a chance to stake a claim,” Solskjaer said defending his decision to field his B team.

The B Team

Manchester United’s first team has been brilliant but things most often fall apart once the substitutes are introduced. Players like Fred, Williams, and McTominay, who all have had great seasons pre-lockdown, now look like they should be playing for Norwich. And their goalkeeper…. Don’t get me started on David De Gea…

“David knows he should have saved the second goal, but that’s done now. It’s hard for a goalkeeper to make amends. It’s so much easier for outfield players. He showed in the rest of the game that he made a few good saves but David knows he should have saved that one.”

via GIPHY

David De Gea was at fault for the first two goals and should have done better on the third. De Gea has been bad for a couple of years now. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to make difficult decisions on the goalkeeping position.

United may have been overhyped. Chelsea were the first decent team they played against post-lockdown and they made them look average. Manchester United supporters should keep faith in their attacking talent. But their manager, defence, and goalkeeper shouldn’t inspire much confidence going forward.

Top 10 Premier League Transfers Of The 2019 Summer

The Premier League transfers window shut a couple of weeks ago so I figured it would be cool to make a list of the best deals made. Of course, as with every list, there are criteria.  We’ll measure each transfer by three factors: ability, need, and value for money.

Premier League Transfers Criteria

1. Ability

This should be the easiest. How good is the player? I’ll be judging each player from what is called the eye-test,

Simply put, the eye test is a way to judge an athlete as they compete within their sport based upon your own observations. Not by statistics, but by the media or any other means other than your own two eyes. – Domenic Scarano from Bleacher Report

…that is, of course, if I have seen the player play. if not, I’ll do my rigorous research on YouTube.

2. Need

Did the club in question need the player? Sometimes, clubs buy players because of availability, affordability, or the need to weaken their rivals. I’ll be judging whether or not the team was in desperate need of the player’s services.

3. Value for money

Unless they are Neymar, Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Lionel Messi, a player’s marketability isn’t going to match the amount of money the club shelled out for them in the first place. This is football in 2019.  That being said, they are still some great deals you can find in the premier league transfers market.

EPL: Are Manchester United Better Off Without Lukaku?

I hate to have to say this to all Manchester United supporters… but your team stinks. Last season your side finished 6th, this is the 5th time in seven seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson left that they finished outside of the top four. You are up in arms over the ownership. And Liverpool won another Champions League trophy…

It sucks being a Manchester United supporter in 2019.

The next episode in the Manchester United soap opera is called ‘Romelu Lukaku: Should He Go or Should He Stay?’. There is apparent interest in the player from Inter Milan.

Lukaku doesn’t seem to be in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær plans for the future. But, Manchester United aren’t budging over their £79 million valuation of the player.
