Orlando Pirates battered Horoya and are now top of their CAF Champions League group. Whilst Mamelodi Sundowns registered their first win in their victory over Wydad Casablanca.

All the teams in Group B went into the weekend’s fixtures with a single point. Espérance beat FC Platinum comfortably during the day. The onus was on Orlando Pirates to do the same to Horoya at the Orlando stadium in the evening.

Lorch finally broke the deadlock seconds before the halftime break with a close-range left-footed hammer at the near post.

In the second half, it seems as though the altitude in Johannesburg was affecting the Horoya players. They looked tired. Orlando Pirates capitalised. Justin Shonga made it 2-0 with a quarter of an hour remaining. He netted his brace three minutes later.

Themba Zwane opened the scoring after only 8 minutes. Mamelodi Sundowns created more goal opportunities but missed the majority all of them.

Wydad Casablanca was thankful for Sundowns’ poor finishing. They restored parity with ten minutes remaining in the first half thanks to a long-range strike from Mohamed Nahiri.

In the second half, Sundowns continued with their pressure and in the 64th minute, Themba Zwane netted is second with a brilliant volley from the edge of the box.



In the dying moments of the game, there was drama as Wydad Casablanca felt Sundowns ‘antifootball antics’ were shameless.

Postgame coach Pitso Mosimane said:

“Sundowns can never be an ice cream team where they play nice football all the time‚” 

“We are getting wiser and we now know how to play in this competition because it is not always about the game but your mental attitude.

“Gone are the days where Sundowns are cheeseboys‚ not when I am still here.

“We have to fight fire with fire‚ even in the PSL.
