Brace yourselves my South African people Stuart Baxter isn’t leaving the Bafana Bafana coaching position anytime soon.
Baxter said he’d quit should his team not qualify for the AFCON before Bafana’s game on Sunday evening.
Clarifying his original statement‚ Baxter said: “Well look‚ what I’ve said [in the past] – it’s the truth and the reality of a coach.
“A coach will do a job as long as he feels that he can do the job.
“People will not tell me‚ ‘You can’t coach Bafana‚ because of blah‚ blah‚ blah’. I will know that for my own reasons.
“It may be for my own motivation‚ for my own health‚ or because I don’t feel that I’m taking the team wherever I want it to go.
Bafana Bafana were met by over-joyed supporters when they arrived at OR Tambo Airport on Tuesday after winning the FIFA World Cup qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Stuart Baxter must have been the happiest of them all when SA Football Association’s (Safa) declared that the Briton would not be burdened with a mandate at the continental event in Egypt in June. Meaning Bafana Bafana can lose all their games, scoring 0 goals, and mumble ‘die stem’ again and Baxter will remain employed.
Being a Bafana coach isn’t easy. Many have tried and many have failed. I even tried on FIFA and I wasn’t successful (and I’m pretty good at that game). However, a coach should keep their job because of their accomplishments. Yes, winning the FIFA World Cup, sorry, qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) is a biggish deal but Bafana Bafana should perform well at the showpiece come June.
