Should Gavin Hunt’s Head Be On The Chopping Block?

Last night Bidvest Wits lost, again, to Mamelodi Sundowns by two goals to zero.   Is it time for Bidvest Wits to panic?

When my under-9 soccer team I coach is on a run of bad results, I strategically dissociate myself with them and explain to parents that the reason the team stinks now is a result of their brat kids being lazy and not good enough. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way in professional football. When a team is playing badly all of us look at the coach. Gavin Hunt’s Bidvest Wits have collected only eight from a possible 30 points in the league and are sitting second from bottom.

Bidvest Wits v Mamelodi Sundowns: Quick Review

15th placed reigning champions Bidvest Wits take on struggling Mamelodi Sundowns in a flyweight matchup at the Bidvest Stadium tonight. Which of these two underperforming big teams will have the knockout punch?

At this point in the season, I was expecting this game to be a matchup of two teams slugging it out for a place to be top the table. Unfortunately, their recent crappy form has degraded this match to a midtable side against a relegation-threatened one.

Is Complacency Creeping In The Champions Bidvest Wits?

Bidvest Wits have begun the season with a run of one win, two draws and five defeats in all competitions. This is the worst record of any defending champion in Premier Soccer League history. Are Gavin Hunt and Bidvest Wits resting on your laurels?

History has proven complacency is a champion’s worst nightmare, like when James Buster Douglas knocked out undefeated heavyweight champ Mike Tyson in 1990, or when Senegal shocked previous world cup winners France 1-0 in the 2002 World Cup, or when I lost to my 12-old girl cousin on FIFA17 two-week ago.

All these losses are attributed to complacency. Bidvest Wits has the Complacencitious Syndrome (and yes I did just make that up).

Here is a summary of Bidvest Wits’ season so far:

It seems like Gavin Hunt’s team is satisfied with what they have achieved last season. As Sir Alex Ferguson once exclaimed: “attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.” Hunt is known to build his teams from the back but recently his defence has been leaking more goals than the Daily Maverick has been leaking Gupta emails. A lack of defensive awareness and an absence of desire from his Wits players to do their job defensively has cost the team.

Go forward they aren’t too impressive either. Bidvest Wits have dominated the ball possession in all seven matches they have played so far but the Clever Boys haven’t looked too clever in front of goal, no clear-cut opportunities that you’d blame a player for missing, only speculative shots that tested goalkeepers on occasion and half chances on set plays.

Moneeb Josephs is not impressed with his team’s hunger so far…

It isn’t all bad, With only 4 games played in the league Bidvest Wits still have plenty of time to correct their deficiencies because they have the quality and depth in their squad.

What you guys think? Do you think it’s a case of Complacencitious Syndrome or does it go deeper? Leave your comment below.
